JonathansHeart.org Statistics
Our goal at Jonathan's Heart is to create awareness of Long QT Syndrome and educate and empower the
community at large in the effort to stop sudden cardiac deaths in children.
Heart disease is the #1 cause of death in the United States. More than 930 Americans die each day
of coronary heart disease without being hospitalized. Most of these sudden deaths are caused by cardiac
arrest.
Each year 32,000 babies will be born with a heart defect. 300,000 youths under age 21 have a congenital
heart defect. 3000 children and young adults die of sudden cardiac arrest each year.
Sudden cardiac death occurs over 1000 times per day or every 2 minutes in the United States.
Each month as many as 600 young people die suddenly and unexpectedly due to cardiac arrhythmias.
These conditions include Long QT Syndrome, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, Arrhymogenic Right Ventricular
Dysplasia, and others.
Early Defibrillation and AED's
Early defibrillation is main standard in immediate care for victims of a sudden cardiac arrest, as
it has proven to drastically improve the survival rate of arrest victims across age groups. Time is
critical. For every minute without defibrillation, a cardiac arrest victim's chance of survival
decreases by 10%. After 10 minutes, the chance of survival is practically nonexistent. Thanks to
advances in technology, there has been a dramatic reduction in cost and improvement in availability
for AED's. Widespread distribution of this technology has become easier to envision as a result.
AED's are light, portable devices that analyze the heart's rhythms to determine if a shock is needed.
They are easy to use, safe and effective. It is believed that the chance of survival has moved from 3%
with CPR to 50% with AEDs and CPR. By placing AED's in schools and public buildings throughout the nation,
and educating the public on how to use these devices, we can save thousands of lives every year.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest can strike anyone, anywhere, anytime. We believe the citizens of this country
deserve access to AED devices and education, so that we can reduce the number of preventable fatal
incidents.
